Things between John and Xavier become tense, but they eventually start to get on. John proposes to Gina, but, to his shock, he is rejected. Mitzy tells Marilyn that she has lung cancer and she later dies from a stroke. Robert Palmer (1757–1805?), the actor's brother, played with success impudent footmen and other parts belonging to Palmer's repertory, and was good in the presentation of rustic characters and of drunkenness. John and Gina plan to adopt Jett, but Richard gets in touch and states that he wants his son. Gina and John say goodbye to Jett, but a couple of weeks later, Richard allows him to return. John thinks that Gina and Jett are leaving him out of their celebrations. He lies to Gina and says that he got drunk in a meeting, but Marilyn accidentally reveals the truth. Gina confronts John over being dishonest and she later accuses Marilyn of having an affair with John. He moves out but Gina asks him to return when he injures himself doing maintenance on the house.

Raffy is Ty's foster sister, ex-girlfriend and first kiss. He and Raffy didn't get along at first and Raffy hated his attitude and they argued. Ty falls down an embankment in the bush, and injures his head and ankle. He manages to call Ryder, who sends John and Alf Stewart to help rescue him. In the hospital, Ty admits to John and Marilyn that he is gay, and asks them to talk to Raffy, who reacts angrily when she believes Ty was just using her and they split up.

He began playing John Palmer, a recurring guest role in 2009. He was initially only signed to the show for twelve weeks. The character was said to be a "strict father to his stepson" Trey Palmer , and a member of the surf lifesaving club. When John's wife Gina dies of a brain aneurysm, Marilyn supports him through his grief and realises that she has feelings for John. Her friends dissuade her from asking him out as he is still grieving for Gina, but they eventually admit their feelings for each other and also go into business together.
She decides to undergo surgery to conceive and she later becomes pregnant. After visiting Vinnie Patterson to get an astrology reading, Marilyn goes into labour two weeks early. Complications develop with the birth and Marilyn is put under anaesthetic, so doctors can perform a cesarean. She then opens and works in her own Hair and Beauty Salon. Marilyn becomes friends with Steven Matheson and they eventually begin a relationship.However, it does not last and they decide to just be friends.
He is married to Anne Tenney, who played his character's wife Molly Jones on A Country Practice. John and Gina begin arguing and John briefly moves in with Alf Stewart. Their daughter has actually starred alongside her father on Home and Away. Off-screen the actor is happily married to a former co-star and enjoys an idyllic family life away from Summer Bay. The married pair first met on the hit 80s Australian soap opera A Country Practice, where they played on-screen couple Brendan and Molly Jones.
After John Palmer moves in, Marilyn and Roo become annoyed with his irritating habits. They stage an intervention and encourage him to become a better housemate. Marilyn worries about Colleen after Lance reveals he is moving to Las Vegas and her caravan is robbed. Marilyn helps clean things up and she finds a winning lottery ticket, which she gives to Colleen and convinces her to spend the money wisely.
He has worked several jobs during his time in Summer Bay, including managing the Juice Bar and working as a Surf Life Saver. The character was married to school principal Gina Austin and they fostered Jett James . Following Gina's death, John married Marilyn Chambers in 2014. An attempt to reap a lesson from the incident was made by saying that his last words were, There is another and a better world. It was said, too, that this phrase, which occurs in the third act, was to be placed on his tomb. However, Whitfield told Frederic Reynolds that Palmer fell in Whitfield's presence, meaning it was later than these lines in the play.
